Abstract
Joint investigation teams are fundamental instruments of cooperation for combating the most serious crimes (like terrorism or drug trafficking) in the field of EU Freedom, Security and Justice.
They could also be used more effectively, in particular through a stronger involvement of both Europol and Eurojust.
Joint investigation teams can be considered valuable tools in the development of a criminal justice area in the EU, but due to reluctance and lack of trust, only very few JITs have been established.
The paper deals with the outstanding potential Europol and Eurojust may have in the work of joint investigation teams, for example through logistical, financial and analytical support, special web pages, manuals and handbooks, special experts and advisers, AWF, interpretation and translation services, etc.
