Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to explore how external and internal characteristics, as well as intrapsychic factors, influence the career choice motivation of professionals working in child protection. Particular attention is given to prosocial values, empathy, and personal life history determinants (“wounded healer”, early traumatization, current crises).

Methodology: The paper is a literature-based synthesis complemented by practical observations, research findings, and fictitious case examples. The analysis differentiates between external motivational factors (livelihood, qualifications, interests), internal motivations (value orientation, helping attitude), and intrapsychic dimensions (life history experiences, psychological vulnerability).

Findings: The complex system of motivational factors plays a decisive role in choosing and sustaining a helping profession. The motivational specificities of foster parents and those holding leadership positions in child protection indicate further challenges, which may lead to emotional strain, role conflicts, and the risk of burnout. The case examples highlight how the intertwining of personal experiences and professional roles can be both a resource and a risk.

Value: The study offers practically relevant insights: it fosters the awareness of motivational factors, thereby supporting child protection professionals in better managing emotional burdens. The analyses and examples presented contribute to the early recognition and prevention of psychological and systemic risks, while promoting long-term career sustainability and the maintenance of professional quality.
