Abstract

Aim: Object of the volume is to reveal and present the paradoxes existing in criminology, criminal justice, the operation of the police, prison life and the legal system.
Methodology: Based on extensive domestic and international professional literature and research results, the author points out the contradictions prevailing in the analyzed fields.
Findings: The articles dealing with different topics in the volume have in common that they indirectly or directly refer to the contradiction between freedom and security in democratic societies. The author's point of view is that criminology can contribute to the moderation of contradictions in accordance with the requirements of the rule of law by exploring social contexts and countering simplistic views about criminality.
Value: The book enriches Hungarian criminology with its wealth of topics and the author's critical analyses.
