Abstract
Aim: The aim of my present study is to point out that the 20th century Popperian criminal psychology classification reflects less on nowdays’ scientific needs, and at the same time to point out the main aspects along which a redefinition of the modern concept of criminal psychology is necessary. These aspects are the evaluation of investigative psychology, highlighting its role in the field of science and learning about its applied procedures. Investigative psychology is a subfield of criminal psychology based on Popper's classification, but at the same time, I believe that its role will gain more emphasis in modern law enforcement over time. In addition to investigative psychology, I also try to point out other applied fields, the role of which has been less highlighted up until now.
Methodology: Through a literature review I intend to present the relationship between criminal psychology and investigative psychology, and then I will list the main investigative psychological procedures.
Findings: The role of investigative psychology is much more important today than it was in the second half of the 20th century, and for this reason it needs to be redefined. Of the individual procedures used, offender or criminal profiling is the focus of empirical investigations, however, in addition to profiling, there are also a number of special psychological procedures that have an investigative support function. Alternative modeling of criminal psychology has also become necessary, for which I also outline a model I have classified.
Value: It may be necessary to reconsider the framework of criminal psychology, on which there is no consensus yet. At the same time, the use of the terminology of investigative psychology could specify and differentiate the focus of empirical research based on criminal psychology and the reliability of special investigation support procedures.
